Ask Terri: Staging Your Home During the Holidays

Dear Terri:
It’s right before Christmas and I’m getting ready to sell my house. Should I keep any decorations up in the staged house?
Holiday Helen

Dear Holiday Helen,
In the Chicagoland area there are fewer homes on the market during the holiday season. While you may experience fewer showings, keep in mind the buyers that are out there braving the cold are serious about finding a new home!

Staging your home during the holidays will create a warm and welcoming ambiance. Begin by clearing clutter and store some of your “everyday” decor. Keep in mind “less is more”.

Consider a smaller tree to maximize room space. When decorating the tree, keep it simple and keep the heirloom ornaments packed safely away. Put a few matching wrapped presents under the tree. During showings soft music in the background helps set the stage.

While holiday scents are wonderful, keep the fragrance in your home very light. Strong scents in a home can be very off putting to prospective buyers.

The entryway is very important, you will want to create a welcoming first impression. A wreath on the front door, or a pot of evergreens with a bow will add a bit of holiday cheer.

Keep your driveway and walkways clean and free from ice. If you have outdoor lights, make sure cords are safely secured and do not present a tripping hazard.

Make sure to put down throw rugs and have a basket of booties to protect your flooring.
